“Alekos Fasianos” museum is dedicated to the artist’s works from 1956 until his death. It includes abstract works of the 1960s, mixed techniques, collages, works influenced by Byzantine art and works inspired by the neighbourhood where he lived and where the museum is located today, often combining heroes of his childhood with heroes of Greek mythology. In addition to paintings, the museum displays personal items such as books, archives, texts and costume designs, thus illuminating the multifaceted personality of Fasianos. The museum is housed in a 1970 apartment building, which was built on the site of a neoclassical house. The architect Kyriakos Krokos remodeled the apartment building by emphasizing the contrast between vertical axes and the balconies’ horizontal lines. It is governed by an austere volume and is dominated by exposed concrete, metal and glass. The internal glazed skylight allows the flow of natural light.
Krokos’ remodeling was sweeping and many decisions regarding the building’s redesign were made on the spot, especially when new data emerged, such as unknown previous layers and architectural additions. Krokos was inspired by Fasianos, thus, the result is in harmony with the content of the museum. Alexandros or Alekos Fasianos (1935-1998) studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts, was a student of Giannis Moralis, studied ancient Greek vase painting and Byzantine iconography, he pursued further studies in Paris with a scholarship from the French government, lived between Athens and Paris, dozens of his works were exhibited in many museums and art events around the world and at the same time, he was engaged in engraving, book illustration, poetry, writing, architecture, design and more.
