What I can see

The Train-Theatre “To Treno sto Rouf” is a unique cultural multi-space that is worth visiting. Attention is initially drawn to a rare industrial relic, the 1953 Breda Ma 1002 steam locomotive, which was very powerful and is the second of 20 that were made in Milan exclusively for Greece, as part of Italy’s World War II war reparations to Greece. 9 restored old carriages of various eras follow, some of which are dressing rooms and auxiliary spaces. The Theatre Wagon (78 seats) is one of the smallest theatrical stages in the world. It is a 1950’s passenger wagon with a train simulation mechanism for a more realistic experience. The museum-value restored Orient Express “Music Wagon” of the 1926 homonymous legendary train, serves as a music stage, where one can also have a meal or drink, with various platters (e.g. cheese, cold meat, fish), many types of wine, cocktails and beer. The “Wagon Restaurant” is an Italian pre-war dining wagon (1926), often with live music, art installations, exhibitions and other artistic events, also with interesting menu options and dishes of the day. It is famous for its pumpkin soup, mushroom linguini and Italian salad. “Wagon Bar” is an atmospheric wagon with alternative music, drinks for all tastes, from tsipouro to cocktails. It is a Bulgarian wagon of 1966, which carried 8 horses and 20 men. The restaurant and bar are expanded in the “Open Air Platform” during the summer months. It is surrounded by plants, offers drinks and light food. Moreover, music events, exhibitions, film screenings and performances take place next to the train carriages. The “New Wagon” is the newest wagon, where performances and the Young Artists and Contemporary Dance festivals take place every May and September, with free entry.

What I can't see

In addition to being a listed industrial monument, it is a hub of culture with respect for diversity and is the world’s only artistic train, a pioneering idea of the actress and director Tatiana Lygari. In the 19th century, Jules Verne envisioned a train-theatre, and this vision was materialized here, 125 years later. The Treno sto Rouf (Train in Rouf) also provides offer packages, which strengthens its identity as a multi-space, as well as guided tours about the rich history of each carriage and the historical Rouf station, from the years of the reign of King Otto to the present day. Rouf is the district named after the Bavarian businessman and landowner in the area, during the years of Otto’s reign. The Treno sto Rouf stages performances from many genres of theatre, the majority of performances are original, promote knowledge, young artists and their works. Productions and activity of the Treno sto Rouf deal with contemporary social and political topics and collaborates with dozens of private and public social, educational and cultural institutions. Over 140,000 students have attended the activities of the children’s stage, hundreds of artists and groups of artists have participated in productions and festivals of the multipurpose space, and the total number of visitors exceeds 1,000,000.
