What I can see
The museum consists of two main permanent exhibitions, the natural history collections and the environmental exhibition of GAIA Centre. It is housed in a preserved 19th-century building with modern additions. The galleries are divided into three areas: a) botanical exhibits, b) zoological exhibits, c) geological and palaeontological exhibits. Among the zoological exhibits, the collections of zoology, entomology, herpetology, marine biology and ornithology are included. The GAIA Centre stretches over six floors and covers a total area of 12,000 sqm, of which four floors are underground. It also has laboratories, a library, conference facilities, showrooms, interactive exhibits and the “Geosphere”.
What I can't see
Originally started as a botanical museum and later became a museum of natural history. The purpose of the museum is to promote science, knowledge and respect for nature. For this reason, it hosts several educational programs and guided tours for students. The museum’s activity extends to other parts of Attica (e.g. the Mediterranean garden “Sparoza” in Paiania) and Greece (e.g. Thessaloniki, Rethymno).
