The Finnish Institute studies Greek archaeology, language, history and culture. It carries out archaeological research, such as in Koroni and the Greek colony of Naxos in Sicily, but also other studies, such as on Finland’s representation in the Greek press during the 1939-1940 winter, Northern European philhellenism, Hellenistic Athens, Greek myths and many more. The Association of Friends of the Finnish Institute at Athens supports the activities of the institute, grants scholarships, organizes visits, lectures, conferences and publishes the magazine Helikon twice a year.
It is the second oldest Finnish institute outside Finland. Its founding members come from Finland’s academic, business and intellectual circles. The institute is also member of the Nordic Library, with approximately 40,000 volumes.
