What I can see

The metro station received its name from the old name of the central railway station of Athens and is developed on two levels, those of the tickets and the platforms. On the first level, there are decorative works of art with old trains, wagons and wheels, which symbolically connect the metro station with the historic railway station. The most distinctive element of the station, however, is the decoration of the platforms with “Human Crowds” by Giorgos Gaitis, an important representative of modernism. The work consists of painted wood and represents 22 black and white cubist male figures on a red background. The figures are inexpressive and symbolize the mental loneliness of man, despite the fact that in the physical space he is surrounded by large crowds. The metal seats on either side of the work follow the logic of the sculpture, resulting in a single and harmonious whole.

What I can't see

Cubist male figures were Gaiti’s artistic hallmark. This particular work is a copy and was made with the permission of his daughter. The metro construction company wanted to highlight some of the country’s great artists through the decoration of the stations and this is why we see various works in most of the stations.
