What I can see
The Athinogenis Mansion has a neoclassical facade with Ionic pilasters and is combined with Baroque elements, as seen mainly in the crowning. Today, the mansion is undergoing a development phase with the preservation and restoration of the listed building and on the back side – and at a small distance – the construction of an eight-storey bioclimatic building with a pleated facade, which will stand discreetly, respecting the historic building. The two buildings will be connected by an aerial bridge and a courtyard space will be ensured between them and around the neoclassical mansion. The design has been undertaken by the architectural firm Athens Creative.
What I can't see
The mansion was owned by the banker and politician Ioannis Athinogenis. It is not clear who designed it. There are speculations about Frederic Piat, Eugene Trumb and Ernst Ziller. At the end of the 19th century and for a short period of time, it housed the Ottoman Bank. The preservation of its facade and part of the layout’s frame was proposed, after it became the property of the Historical and Ethnological Society. This proposal caused reactions and the Central Council of Modern Monuments favoured the preservation of the entire building.
