What I can see
The City Hall of Thessaloniki is a combination of linear wings and sculptural shapes, which create a spatial dialogue both between themselves and the outdoor space. The area of the plot is 14,588 m². A 5,217 of that is green space and 551.7 are water surfaces. The crooked shape adds a feeling of intensity to the building, which is a welcome addition to the Museum of Byzantine Culture and the Archaeological Museum, both synthetically and morphologically, as seen in the use of unplastered, elaborated concrete like that of the Byzantine Museum and the marble plating the one found in the Archaeological Museum. The taller wing functions as a background to the rest of the building and in combination while the lower one, encloses a lobby, which is the “heart” of the building. The end-to-end outdoor space is accessible to the public and reflects a sense of intimacy between the visitor and the hall as well as promoting the social, political and cultural character of the building.
What I can't see
This project went through several ups and downs for many years. The result is considered positive from an architectural point of view. The composition of the architects Tasos and Dimitris Biris has a functional philosophy, meaning that the spaces are hierarchically positioned, according to the working needs of the city hall.
