The museum’s main theme is the importance of the icon for the Church and the Orthodox doctrine, while one can also learn about the history of the Thessaloniki metropolitan church. The exhibits include Byzantine and post-Byzantine relics, such as icons, utensils and manuscripts. The museum is also equipped with digital virtual tour applications. The building was designed by Angelos Siagas, who tried to combine modernism with byzantinism and traditional local architecture.
The first combination attempt of modernism with neo-Byzantine elements was made by Nikolaos Mitsakis in the school complex of Agia Sophia. The museum architecturally imitates Mitsakis’ work. It was founded by the then archbishop Anthimos and, in addition to visitors, attracts scholars and students.
