In an area of 5 acres, on the old Perikleous stream (a tributary of the Dendropotamos River), is the Stavroupoli Botanical Garden. Access to the garden is free and despite its small size, its ecological and educational value is great. It hosts over 1000 species of plants, among them conifers (e.g. cedars, firs, cypresses, pines), seasonal plants, cacti, succulents, palms and Mediterranean plants. In the centre of the garden, we find the greenhouse with tropical, subtropical plants, epiphytes, water-loving and carnivorous plants. We also see the so-called romantic kiosk with climbing plants, framed by beautiful internal paths that run through the garden. The garden is not suffocating among buildings, but is surrounded by playgrounds, sport venues, an amphitheater and small parks.
It is one of only 10 botanical gardens in Greece. It was designed by agronomist Athena Hatziathanasiadou and architect Giannis Mirtsios, while it was implemented by the Municipality of Stavroupoli. Educational excursions are held and the garden is also a very useful tool for students of the School of Agriculture of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The goals of this garden are the environmental awareness and education, the protection of biodiversity, the promotion of research, the cooperation with botanical gardens abroad and the environmental, cultural, tourist and economic growth of the area.
