The former Gavriiloglou tobacco warehouse now houses a five-star hotel. It is a very impressive building of interwar Thessaloniki, with many art deco and expressionist influences that we find in buildings of that era in Germany and Italy. The horizontal strips above and below the openings give linearity to the facades, which is interrupted by the vertical – with an arched end and a skylight – glazing staircase.
The building has been classified as a work of art by the Ministry of Culture. It belonged to the tobacco merchant Georgios Gavriiloglou, who came from Barfa in Asia Minor (modern day Turkiye). With the population exchange between Greece and Turkiye, he was forced to leave his homeland and continued his business in Thessaloniki. Until the late 1960s, the building was a tobacco warehouse. It later housed offices and shops, until it was finally converted into a hotel.
