A very special international festival takes place every two years (biennale) in Athens. The AGON Archaeological Film Festival is not limited to archaeology and excavations, but is also about lost worlds, the legacy they left behind, and thematically extends to every aspect of human universality, from antiquity to the cultures of modern migration and from industrial archaeology to folk arts.
Although it is not considered a “frontline” festival, the audience is always enthusiastic. Its inspiration, implementation and development have been a women’s affair. It was inspired by the film director Memi Spyratou and took place with the support of the journalist Lena Savvidi and the archaeologist and publisher of the Archaeology and Arts magazine, Anna Lambraki. Currently, it is organized by the AGON non-profit company. It has become an international cultural institution and has collaborated with many entities, such as the National Gallery of Arts- Washington, the Goethe Institut, the French Embassy and the Greek Ministry of Culture. Films from this festival have also been in the programs of many networks, such as the BBC, RAI, ARTE, ZDF, RIK and ERT.
