The complex of the Athens Medical School consists of 4 main buildings and is a sample of the modernist architectural movement. The architecture of the Medical School introduced an innovative change to the landscape of the time. Its clean, but asymmetrical and undecorated volumes and the functional and rational arrangement of the spaces are elements that significantly moved architecture away from neoclassicism. This modern movement, however, also sought to shape a new “Greekness”, beyond the neoclassical norms that were directly linked to the ancient Greek past.
Designed by Emmanuel Kriezis, this work has been identified with the beginning of the Greek modern movement. Both Kriezis and his work received rave reviews from the German and French press, while they were totally ignored by the Greek press.

1929 Foundation was laid in the presence of Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos.
1933 Housed the Laiko Hospital, as is the case to this day.
1935 Completed.
