The Belgian Archaeological School in Greece primarily carries out archaeological research and then publishes the results, organizes conferences, seminars and open discussions. It is mainly active in the archaeological sites of Thorikos, and in three locations in eastern Crete.
The first steps for the establishment of the school began in the early 1960s with the collaboration of Greek and Belgian archaeologists, especially during the excavations at Thorikos. Most of the members of the Belgian Archaeological School had been members of the French Archaeological School since the first decades of the 20th century.
1962 The National Centre for Excavations Abroad was founded in Belgium and the following year it became a non-profit organization.
1985 The Greek government gave permission for the establishment of a permanent school.
2003 Founded.
