What I can see

This is a cruciform church with an Athenian-type dome. A small Arab community lived in Athens during the 10^th century. This is probably why a frieze is preserved on the west side with an old Arabic script (kufic). A similar frieze is found on the church of Agii Theodori near Klafthmonos Square.

What I can't see

During the Ottoman period it was also called “Asomatos of Gyftoporta” because it was near one of the gates of the wall of Chasekis, the “Gyftoporta” (Gypsy Gate). Several additions were made to the church, which strongly altered its form. Once these were removed (1960), the church returned to its original form, the one we see today.
