This commercial building, with a total area of 2,361 sq m, has a unique facade. Two sloping surfaces form a geometric prismatic facade, which is in projection in relation to the adjacent buildings. These surfaces consist of glass curtains, framed by wood. Natural light diffuses into the building through them, while its interior is also visible from the street. The simple design almost comes in contrast with the imposing volume of the building, which seems to cause a disharmony in relation to the width of the street and the scale of the surrounding urban environment. It is attached to the adjacent buildings, as a result of which it lacks the necessary spatial “breathing spaces”, which could frame and highlight its contemporary design.
Bobotis Architects (Theofanis and Loukas Bobotis) designed the building for fashion houses. The wood and extensive use of glass indicate the architects’ bioclimatic orientation, as well as the desire to make the most of natural light on a narrow street in Athens, which is full of buildings and shadows. The flow of natural light is not interrupted inside the building, thanks to the transparent floors.
