What I can see
Monumenta is an initiative that evolved into a movement for the protection of natural and architectural heritage of Greece and Cyprus. It is a non-profit organization and its contribution to people’s awareness for the protection of buildings, monuments and landscapes, has achieved impressive results, often with the official designation of buildings and monuments as “listed”. Through Monumenta’s website, and more specifically, through almost 38,000 photos and hundreds of magazine articles, we get informed about more than 5000 buildings. Meanwhile, Monumenta carries out educational and research programs.
What I can't see
The coordinators, as well as other members of the organization, are scientists from various fields, such as archaeologists, architects, engineers and environmentalists. Monumenta collaborates with publishing houses, the Technopolis of the Municipality of Athens and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, whose donation contributed to the digitisation of the magazine on behalf of the National Library. Through technological and methodological innovation, as well as rare archival material, Monumenta brings to the surface the “unknown” Athens, which makes its work valuable.
