What I can see
It is considered a member of the elite of the international scientific community and one of the leading centres for the study of music. The Music Library of Greece – Lilian Voudouri is housed in the new wing of the Athens Concert Hall. It occupies 4 floors with a total area of 3,800sqm out of which 940sqm are the reading rooms. Its material is constantly enriched with books, journals, records, musical scores, rare audio-visual material on Western music, Greek music (ancient, Byzantine, traditional, artistic) and the musical traditions of cultures from all over the world. In addition, it has collections related to visual arts, theatre, philosophy and literature. A real treasure of the library is the “Archive of Greek Music” with valuable themed and personal archives of major Greek musicians, such as Mikis Theodorakis, Nikos Skalkotas, Manolis Kalomiris and many more. Digitized items of this archive alone number 300,000.
What I can't see
It was founded by the “Friends of Music” association and continues to be financed by it. The library was the idea of Dr. Christoph Stroux, first manager of the association. The bequest of Alexandra Triantis and the large sponsorship of the Lilian Voudouris Foundation contributed decisively to its funding. It is a member of the International Organization of Music Libraries, collaborates with cultural organizations in Greece and abroad, participates in scientific programs and belongs to the first cultural organizations in the country that provided digital content to Europeana. In addition to the free provision of its material, the library carries out activities and educational actions for young people, children, adults and organizes conferences, book presentations, performances and seminars.
