What I can see
Allos Tropos (Another Way in Greek) is a beautiful corner in the city centre, where one can listen to artistic Greek folk music and be “transferred” to Crete through a variety of flavours. It collaborates with Spitiko Meraki in Rethymno, is famous for its tsikoudia (raki) and especially for the tsikoudia with pomegranate and other flavours, such as strawberry-chocolate and melon. The biggest challenge for a customer is to choose among the many interesting options on the menu. It is worth trying the “Allos Tropos” salad and there is a wide variety of Cretan traditional dishes, such as sausage with stamnagathi, syglino of Crete, snails cooked with the face down, sfakiani pie and zucchini flowers. At the same time, there are also traditional dishes with modern touches, such as Philadelphia saganaki with honey and sesame, kavourmas with egg and many more.
What I can't see
Although the menu is related with Crete, it does not fail to praise Thessaloniki in a poetic way. After all, literature and Allos Tropos are not unrelated. In 1969, Ioannis Sfakianakis founded the “Sfakianakis” publishing house and bookstore at 71 Ermou Street. In 1993, it operated as a café-bookstore and several years later, it was relocated to Platonos Street as the ouzo tavern “Allos Tropos”. Meanwhile, some of the publishing house’s publications were also preserved and stocked in the tavern. This small gastronomic treasure, initially created by Ioannis Sfakianakis, was taken over a few years later by his son Michalis, as is the case to this day.
