At a depth of 22.5m, we are at the narrowest platform of the Thessaloniki metro. Many have even compared it to Clapham Common and Clapham North stations in London, due to this narrowness. The stripes on the walls of the station’s entrance- exit are in a colour associated with the Byzantine past of the city, and in combination with the transverse gray lines, volume and depth are added to the space, thanks to the perspectives they create.
But why is the station so narrow? With the beginning of construction works and the first geological researches, it emerged that the construction site needed shoring and reinforcement, resulting in the closure of Delphon Street and the delay of the works for years, causing serious problems for residents and the financial ruin of businesses in the area. The heavy machinery had very limited space and it was dangerous to be developed under the balconies of apartment buildings. Thus, the construction method changed. An innovative process (jet grouting) was applied, with the assistance of foreign specialists, which resulted in the significant narrowing of the station and the platform.
