This funerary monument is dedicated to Karl Müller. It is a 2.19m high marble column on a marble base and pedestal. The pilaster-style column is crowned with a relief wreath decoration, similar to ancient funerary monuments. The main façade includes Müller’s name, origin, and the dates of birth and death, while on the back, there is a poetic dedication by Philippos Ioannou with words of gratitude and love on behalf of Greeks. The monument still bears signs of vandalism from the early years of its installation, as is also the case with the letter Φ of Philippos Ioannou that is missing.
It is one of the oldest sculptures in the city and was created at the expense of the professors of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. It was probably designed by Christian Hansen and perhaps implemented by the team of Giakoumis Malakates. Karl Othrift Müller, a German classical philologist and archaeologist, who pioneered the study of Greek mythology and history by connecting ancient Greek tradition with European history, was buried at the site of the monument.
