What I can see
The War Museum of Thessaloniki was a military building of the Ottoman army and was designed by Vitaliano Poselli. Its permanent collection focuses on Hellenism of the 19th and 20th centuries, and more specifically, from the Greek Revolution (1821) to the end of World War II. Among the exhibits, we see various types of weapons, from swords to machine guns, models of warships, military uniforms, letters and personal belongings of soldiers, maps, photographs, medals, documents, but also works of art with war or military content, such as paintings, sculptures and lithographs. Moreover, the permanent collection includes family heirlooms of the singer Sophia Vembo, letters of Tahsin Pasha and the yard’s exhibits (torpedoes, light armored vehicles, warplanes).
What I can't see
In 1968, the former MP Giorgos Tsarouchas died here during torture by the junta. One of the torturers was holding a machete and kept saying “with this, I bring out the truth”. Tsarouchas’ torturers were convicted after the restoration of democracy. The museum today operates as an annex of the War Museum of Athens.
