Cretan Macedonian Fighter is a sculpture dedicated to the Cretan fighters of the Macedonian Struggle.

What I can see
Officially, the sculpture is called “Unknown Cretan Fighter”, as is also written on the two-leveled base. It is located at the junction of Pavlou Mela, Dimitriou Gounari and Mitropoleos Streets. It is a bronze sculpture that represents a male figure with military equipment and a strongly patriotic style.
What I can't see
The work was commissioned to the sculptor Giorgos Kikotis by the Pancretian Brotherhood of Macedonia. During the Balkan Wars, many volunteers from Crete, which was an autonomous state and under the control of the Ottoman Empire, fought on the side of the Greek fighters of Macedonia. This sculpture is therefore intended to honour the Cretan fighters of Macedonia and is another example of the dominant type of sculpture in the Greek public space, i.e. monumental sculpture.
