What I can see
Giorgos Tsaras’ work is a bronze realistic sculpture of the great Greek philosopher. It has strong plasticity, Aristotle’s clothes are rendered in detail and he holds papyri in his hands. It is placed in front of a neutral background, which -on the one hand- highlights the sculpture and on the other, “guides” the viewer to admire it from the right angle. It is the second statue of Aristotle in the city centre and is located in the Aristotle University, which was named in his honour, although the university’s logo depicts Saint Demetrius.
What I can't see
Aristotle (384-322 BC) was a philosopher and, together with Plato, a pioneer of ancient Greek thought. He hailed from Stagira in Halkidiki, in the region of Macedonia. He was Plato’s student and a teacher of Alexander the Great. At age seventeen, he went to Athens, where he studied for 20 years at the Academy of Plato. Alexander’s father, King Philip of Macedonia later trusted him with his son’s education. Upon his return to Athens, he founded his own school, the famous Lyceum of Aristotle. His genius is evidenced in his varied writings, which range from politics and morality to science and technology.
