What I can see

There are historical mosques in Athens (Fetihe, Tzistaraki), but they are archaeological monuments and are not used as mosques. On an area of ​​17 acres granted by the Hellenic Navy, a mosque of 1000 square metres was built, with a capacity of 500 people, with a women’s room for 50 people and does not have a minaret.

What I can't see

There are many mosques in the region of Thrace, where the Greek Muslim minority lives. In the rest of the country, the need for mosques arose mainly with the influx of immigrants and refugees from Muslim countries, although the debate on the operation of a mosque in Athens has been going on since the end of the 19th century. There were and still are many makeshift mosques on ground and basement floors of buildings, without meeting basic safety standards. Decades ago, Saudi Arabia was offered to finance the construction of a mosque in Athens, which was ultimately not accepted, since the Greek Orthodox Church was against its construction in Paenia area (eastern Attica) and then anywhere else. After 5 tenders, a contractor was found and it was decided that the mosque will be state-owned and the imam will be appointed by the state. On the occasion of this mosque, three more were licensed in Athens and one in Thiva.
