What I can see

Fetihe Mosque –or “Mosque of Staropazaro”– means mosque of the conqueror. It was built in honour of Muhammad the Conqueror when he came to Athens in 1458. It was the first mosque built in the city and the most important for Athens’ Turkish population during the Ottoman period.

What I can't see

According to Kambouroglou, the building was a Christian church and was later converted into a mosque. According to the latest research, there are indeed remains of the converted Christian church (Christian metropolis), but this building is later, replacing the older mosque. The minaret was demolished during the Greek Revolution. Only the square base and part of the internal staircase are preserved. Since then, the building has gained various functions, as a school of the Music Lovers’ Company, as barracks, a military prison, a military bakery and an antique warehouse. The restoration of the building was delayed, because preparatory works could not be conducted, due to the lack of an alternative location to house the antiquities that were kept here.
