What I can see
The Agricultural University of Athens is located on an area of 62 acres in the western centre of Athens. It consists of 28 building complexes and has 42 laboratories, 55 amphitheatres and many classrooms. Its 5 faculties (Plant Sciences, Animal Sciences, Food and Nutrition Sciences, Applied Biology and Biotechnology, Applied Economics and Social Sciences) consist of 13 departments. The university also has a vineyard, a plantation of trees, an agricultural museum, experimental facilities for plants, productive animals and aquatic organisms, a dairy, a winery, a greenhouse, sericulture and beekeeping unit, a plant nursery, a composting unit, a library, an information centre and sports facilities. The Agricultural University gives us a rare opportunity to see and experience cultivation and agricultural activity in general, in the centre of Athens.
What I can't see
It is the third oldest university in the country, after the National Kapodistrian University of Athens and the National Technical University of Athens. Its aim is to train scientists who fully respond to the requirements of agriculture, its modernization and sustainable development. It cooperates with academic institutions and agencies in Europe, Russia, the USA and China. In recent years, the university has a rich cultural activity – especially during summer months – and the Committee for Gender Equality has an active advisory role. Finally, the university has under its supervision the Diomedes Botanical Garden in Chaidari area and owns farms in Boeotia, Oropos and Artemida.
