What I can see

The findings exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Lavrio come from the entire area of Lavreotiki (SE Attica) and are arranged in chronological order and by ancient municipalities. A stele of Hermes welcomes us in the lobby. The small room, to the left of the entrance, is dedicated to the mines of the area, i.e., objects related to the mining and processing of the minerals, and to the stathmia, which were lead weights for weighing commodities. Moreover, this room includes plaques – landmarks and capitals of the agora near the port of Pasha, as it was called in the Ottoman years. In the atrium, marble exhibits from the region, parts of the frieze of the temple of Poseidon in Sounio and an impressive mosaic from an early Christian basilica of the 4th-5th century AD are exhibited. At the centre of this mosaic, two facing communion cups are depicted, framed by scaly and floral decoration. In the same space, there are other parts of the basilica, tombstones, reliefs, statues, dedications and architectural members of temples. Room 2 “travels” us all over south-east Attica and in particular to Thorikos, Sounio and Kitsos Cave, through ceramic objects, jewelry, weapons and tools from prehistoric to the Byzantine times.

What I can't see

In the area of Lavreotiki, the human presence starts from the Paleolithic period, i.e., 40,000 years ago.
