The Argyropoulos detached house is an excellent example of neo-romantic modernism, inspired by Cycladic houses. It also incorporates features of Mediterranean island architecture, such as loggias and pergolas. It is built on a plot with a steep slope and its asymmetrical volumes give plasticity to the structure. On the side of Fokylidou Street, the walls of the staircase are white and wavy and the enclosed -by a wall- garden, makes the building “introverted”. The greenery blends harmoniously with the volumes and as a result, they smoothly integrate into the hill’s environment.
It was designed by Dimitrios Fotiadis, in collaboration with Ioannis Chalepas and was the property of the diplomat Dimitrios Argyropoulos. Argyropoulos was the Greek consul in Albania during the imminent invasion of Greece by the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. He later served as ambassador to Brazil, Switzerland and the United Nations.
