Aristotelis Secondary School was a girls’ secondary school and belongs to the first school complexes that followed the principles of modern architecture (e.g. clean volumes) and the new trends of the time in pedagogy (e.g. layout of spaces, functionality, ergonomics). At the same time, however, this modern building appeared in an area dominated by older styles, mainly neoclassicism. This caused a problem of “connection” between the modern building and its environment. For this reason, the architect chose to make some mild classicist references (e.g. cornice, type of windows).
The school was originally designed by Ioannis Antoniadis, but later, Nikos Mitsakis changed the original design. Mitsakis had been involved with the architecture of school buildings. Many architects tried to imitate Mitsakis and other prominent modernist architects, but without success. Thus, the school buildings of the pioneers of Greek modernism stand out. The Aristotelis Secondary School today houses the 26th Athens Secondary and High School.
