What I can see

This is a building that was originally constructed as a cinema and was one of the few independent winter cinema buildings in the city. The Art Deco influences are evident and the luxurious marble staircase, the imposing mirror and the 130 sq.m. foyer stand out. The study by architect Solon Kydoniatis, in collaboration with set designer Marios Angelopoulos, was not implemented as planned. Although the final form of the building is more simplified, it remains one of the architect’s best works.

What I can't see

It is considered a cultural heritage landmark of the district, as it was the first cinema in the Ampelokipi area. Moreover, a significant “reversal” took place in Astron. Until then, the balcony tickets in cinemas were cheaper, but the opposite was applied in Astron, with the VIP seats being in the balcony. By doing this, Astron attracted more people from lower classes. The original name of the cinema was Cine Venus, but the bright rotating star that was visible as far as Pangrati area, inspired the name “Astron”. It took 3 attempts to convince the Central Council of Modern Monuments of its architectural value and to be listed as a preserved monument. The coordinated efforts of citizens, the municipality of Athens, the Greek Film Archive, the Technical Chamber of Greece, the Greek Actors’ Union, the Thessaloniki Film Festival and some left-wing parties contributed significantly to this direction.
