What I can see
The church of Agios Dimitrios is cross-roofed with a dome, a representative example of the mid-19th century churches. Its redevelopment and preservation were urgent, since the frescoes and the roof were badly damaged, there were cracks in the walls, and the rest of the church’s decoration, such as the marble pulpit and the wood-carved iconostasis of 1860, also needed to be restored.
What I can't see
It was built on top of an older church, which was either demolished or collapsed. It was founded during the reign of king Otto and for a short period of time, it operated as a cathedral. It also hosted refugees of 1922, whom the parish helped financially. During the last decades of the 20th century, the area was dark at night and sex work flourished in the streets around the church.
