What I can see

This four-storey neoclassical mansion has always housed the German Archaeological Institute. It was designed by Wilhelm Dörpfeld under the supervision of Ernst Ziller. A characteristic feature of Ziller’s architecture is the decoration of the top floor with deep red surfaces, which is also found in other buildings designed by him, such as the Bageion and Megas Alexandros hotels in Omonia. The top floor and the two-storey wing were added later and were also designed by Dörpfeld.

What I can't see

The plot and the building originally belonged to Heinrich Schliemann and were later donated by his son-in-law, who had inherited them. The building had a large garden and the interior painting decoration is impressive. The German Archaeological Institute was the second foreign archaeological institute in Athens, after the French School at Athens. Today, its library has 75,000 titles and a rich archive. The institute is one of the pillars in the study of archeology in Greece, since it is active in several archaeological sites, such as Keramikos in Athens, and other regions of Greece, such as Thiva, Eleusis, Ancient Olympia, Tiryns, Laconia, Samos, Lefkada and Ithaca.
