What I can see

The building was constructed to house the Ethniki Insurance Company. In World War II, it was commandeered by the Germans to house the Kommandatur and its two basements that functioned as anti-aircraft shelters, turned into detention centre. The prisoners were then taken to Averof prisons, military courts, concentration camps, forced labour and execution sites. On the metal doors, walls and windows, we see inmates’ engravings, such as texts, names, dates and sketches.

What I can't see

Greeks aged 14 and over and some German and Italian anti-fascists were imprisoned here. The Nazis kept painting the walls to hide the engravings, but each time, the walls were filled with them again. During the site’s recent maintenance works, paper, metal and glass objects were found in tanks, drains and recesses. During the civil war, the building was commandeered again.
