What I can see
The marble bust of the poet Lorentzos Mavilis is placed on a marble base and is the work of Petros Roubos, who has rendered Mavilis in a way that expresses both sensitivity and bravery.
What I can't see
The sculptor modeled the sculpture after the poet himself, before he left for war. Lorentzos Mavilis (1860-1912) was of Greek-Spanish origin and is considered the greatest sonnet writer of Greece. He graduated from the universities of Athens, Munich, Freiburg and Goethe in Frankfurt. His works are pessimistic and dialogues are their distinct element. In addition to being a lyric poet, he was a talented chess player, a defender of the common Greek language and served as an MP for Venizelos’ party. He was killed in 1912 in the Balkan Wars. This small square, where the bust is placed, bears his name.
