What I can see
The Weiler building is named after the Bavarian military engineer Wilhelm von Weiler who designed it and was inspired by German neo-romanticism (Rundbogenstil). The building was built as a hospital and combines neoclassical and Byzantine elements. This combination probably symbolises the historical continuity of the Greeks from antiquity and Byzantium to the modern and contemporary era. In addition, the Byzantine elements are stronger, as was usual for charitable institutions, since Byzantium is linked with the Christian faith. Today, it houses the Centre for the Acropolis Studies.
What I can't see
It is the oldest building of monumental size in Athens. It was the first hospital in the city and operated as a military hospital. The building’s use changed after World War I, when it became the headquarters of the National Gendarmerie. Sometime later, there were plans for its demolition, in order to build the Themis Melathron (Supreme Court), but these plans were canceled, due to the backlash they had caused.
