What I can see

This coastal district has a distinctive identity thanks to the establishment of many Greeks from Istanbul who came here after 1974. This character is mainly reflected in the culinary tradition that they carried with them. Many restaurants are offering a cuisine from Istanbul as taught and brought over by the Greeks of Istanbul. For this reason, Palaio Faliro is a destination for anyone who wants to taste these special oriental delicacies. However, the economic crisis has not left these restaurants unaffected, so many of them have closed.

What I can't see

The name Faliro comes from the ancient local hero, Argonaut and grandson of Erectheous (ancient king of Athens). The term “Palaio” (= Old) makes it distinct from the later expansion of the settlement, the “Neo (=New) Faliro”. In antiquity, it was an essential port of Athens, until Themistocles built the port of Piraeus and Faliro became a back-up port. Before it became densely populated and one with the urban complex of Athens, it was a countryside destination, with many villas and cottages of wealthy families. The first zoo in the city was established here.
