What I can see
The Solar Village is a settlement of the Labour Organization and the apartments are 100, 80 and 60 square metres in size. Those of 100 square metres are in two-storey buildings and the rest in multi-storey buildings. The settlement is divided into neighbourhoods, and pedestrian streets lead to the centre of the village. The lower level central square is designed as such for energy reasons and creates an atmosphere of intimacy. Around it, the central functions of the settlement (market, schools, library, energy centre, sports facilities, etc.) are developed. Each neighbourhood also has a playground.
What I can't see
It was an ambitious experiment of the principles of bioclimatic design, one that ultimately failed because of the distance between the bureaucracy and the vision of architect Alexandros Tombazis, whose plan included many things that never materialized. The village accommodates 435 families and is the result of cooperation between the Greek and German ministries for the utilization of solar energy. Both energetic (central oil production system, decentralized heat pump system, air collectors, vacuum and water collectors and water tank) as well as passive heating systems are used (direct gains, Trombe and water heater walls, thermosiphonic panels and conservatories).
