What I can see
In a small pedestrian street in Omonia, there is an “archive” of tastes, flavours and nostalgia. Stani’s (Sheepfold in Greek) traditional recipes take us on a journey to Greece of the past, its dairy products and sweets. High-quality pure raw materials from selected producers is one of the secrets of Stanis’ long-term success, as it is one of the few dairies in Attica that survive today, while in the 1960s and 1970s, they numbered around 1600. Stani’s sheep’s yogurt has been awarded a gold medal at the Thessaloniki International Fair and received a patent. It is very healthy, with natural fermentation enzymes, more protein and calcium than cow’s yogurt and is a very safe product, due to its acidic pH. Stani is famous for its award-winning yogurt with honey and walnuts, but it is worth trying everything you can from the wide range of products, including goat’s yogurt, rizogalo (rice pudding), vanilla cream, loukoumades (ancient Greek donuts), pastes, ice cream, syrupy sweets, drinks and moustalevria (from grape juice and flour), a vegan option during the autumn.
What I can't see
The founder of Stani, Nikolaos Karageorgos, came from Fokida area (central Greece), where the biggest milk industrialists were born. He arrived in Piraeus, where he opened the initial store with dairy products, but the bombings of World War II forced him to relocate to Omonia. The Athenians immediately loved Stani and people from the province never forget to visit it when they come to Athens. On an annual basis, more than half of the customers are foreigners, who want to get to know the culinary tradition of Greece in depth. Today, Stani is run by the grandchildren of Nikolaos Karageorgos. It has remained in the same family; this is the third generation that runs the business and is also the third generation of customers and suppliers, which means that the family collaborates with the grandchildren of the producers that their grandfather worked with and serves the grandchildren of his customers.
