What I can see
This building, designed by Alexandros Nikoloudis, a graduate of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and Gaston Gillieron, houses the university’s student club. The ground floor has double height, the floors are separated by a cornice, the simple and complex openings alternate, and the corner of the building is curved. Although the building design is characterized as eclectic by certain critics (e.g. Giochalas-Kafetzakis, 2013, Technical Chamber of Greece), it is an example of classicism, according to the National Research Institute, due to its window pediments and Doric order pessaries. The ground floor houses shops, while the club operates on the upper floors. An additional floor, which was added during the dictatorship (1972), altered the character of the building.
What I can't see
Before the construction of the University Club, the vaudeville summer cinema “Deluxe” (1926-1925) was housed here. On the corner of Ippokratous and Akadimias Streets, the son of the most important historian of modern Greece, Dimitrios Paparigopoulos, held a hunger strike protesting the detention conditions of rebelling miners. His act cost him his life, because his health was shaken considerably and he contracted tuberculosis.
