Building of Early Christian Era
The building of the early Christian era was recently discovered during works of PPC.
Modern and Contemporary era (1912 - )
Ottoman era (1453- 1912)
Byzantine era (331 AC- 1453)
Roman era (30 BC- 330 AC)
It was probably constructed at the end of the 3rd or the beginning of the 4th century AD, as shown by symbols and a coin of the years 395-408 AD.
Hellenistic era (322- 31 BC)
Classical era (478-323 BC)
Archaic era (800-479 BC)
Geometric era (-1100- 800 BC)
Prehistory (-1100 BC)
What I can see
A large early Christian building was recently discovered at the centre of Thessaloniki and included stoas, a mosaic floor, a paved courtyard, columns, capitals and a large marble staircase that in some places reaches up to 8 steps. The antiquities seem to cover an area larger than the area of the plot (1,650 sqm).
What I can't see
The marble architectural members have probably been transferred from older buildings of the Hellenistic period. Mason’s marks found on them, testify to the successive uses of the building. The mosaic floor with geometric representations inside the building dates back to the 6th century AD. On a neighbouring plot, a circular building of the imperial years of the Roman period (2nd-3rd century AD) was found, which was probably destroyed during the 4th century AD, as shown by coins that were discovered. These two buildings are probably related. Archaeological findings of this period are rare in Thessaloniki and therefore, their discovery constitutes a major archaeological event.
