What I can see
The Thessaloniki Courthouse is a building of late modernism, with geometric clarity, vertical concrete blinds and horizontal metal panels. The combination of these two elements makes the facades look rhythmic. The building’s volume is imposing and constitutes a “dissonance” with the historic Vardaris Fortress, which is located right next to it.
What I can't see
It was designed by Spyridon Bonanos and Frangiskos Kefalopoulos. The Courthouse represents an architecture that comes into direct conflict with the traditional or neo-traditional architecture of the city. With this building, as well as others of the same typology and style, new architectural and urban planning rules were imposed, resulting in their facades being completely disconnected from their natural and urban environment. There are plans, however, for its renovation and energy upgrade.
