Excelsior Hotel

Excelsior Hotel is an eclectic building at the corner of Mitropoleos and Komninon Streets.

    1925 Built.

    2008 It was renovated and reopened as a hotel after many years of abandonment.

What I can see

It is a building with morphological influences by the French classicism of the Seconde Empire. A third beveled façade is developed in the corner, in which the central axis is emphasized and crowned with a semicircular capstone. The entrance’s skylight on the lintel is also semi-circular.

What I can't see

It was built after the Thessaloniki fire, during the period when hotels flourished in the city. Engineers Joseph Pleyber and Eli Hassid-Fernades reintroduced eclecticism during an era that its decline had begun, but at the same time utilized newer materials (e.g. reinforced concrete) and sophisticated static systems so that the building met the city’s newer economic needs and be worthy of the plot’s value that had been purchased. The interior decoration is elaborate with plaster elements, marble staircases, railings and wooden handrails.
