What I can see
We see a sculptural ensemble, crafted by Thanasis Apartis, which consists of the bust of Ioannis Papafis (placed on a marble pedestal and a marble floor) and a marble slab with relief representations of students, also including an excerpt from his will, regarding the donation for the construction of the Papafio boarding school. Papafis is portrayed as imposing and serious. The combination of bust and reliefs creates an interesting monument with the bust being a reminder of Papafis’ social activity.
What I can't see
Ioannis Papafis (1792-1886) was born in Thessaloniki. His father was a great merchant in Izmir and Ioannis lived and worked for many years in Malta. His rich philanthropy was not limited only in Thessaloniki, which was under Ottoman rule, but was also expanded in the then young Greek state, often by financing institutions.
