It is a marble geometric sculpture by Konstantinos Xenakis similar to an ancient tombstone, without decoration, representations or realistic elements. It is a monument dedicated to the students who were victims of Nazi atrocities. The dedication on the stele is inspired by the lyric poet Simonides of Kea (556-469 BC), who with these words commemorated the fallen of Lemnos island during the Persian Wars.
The first two students were executed by firing squad on November 13, 1941, for distributing anti-German leaflets, according to German media. During the occupation, a total of 71 students were executed.
