The bronze statue of the fighter of the Greek Revolution, Nikolaos Kassomoulis, originally from Kozani, was sculpted by Efthimios Kalevras and is placed on a marble base. The sculpture exudes some tension, as Kassomoulis is depicted serious, with his head turned to one side and his fustanela (traditional men’s skirt) is in motion. It is a monumental sculpture with -mainly- descriptive characteristics, as can be seen from the details of the clothing. The other sculptures, by the same artist in this square, are in the same style.
Nikolaos Kassomoulis (1795-1872) was the son of a merchant and a local lord, who had been killed in the siege of Naoussa by the Turks in 1822. Nikolaos and his brothers were initiated into the Filiki Eteria and with the outbreak of the Greek Revolution (1821), he took part in battles on Olympus and Halkidiki. The revolution in Macedonia (northern Greece) was suppressed and Kassomoulis went to Peloponnese and Roumeli (southern Greece). He was in the siege of Messolongi by the Turks and later fought on the side of Karaiskakis. With the establishment of the Greek state, he assumed important military duties. During the revolution, Kassomoulis was writing his memoirs, which are an important source of historical information regarding the Exodus of Messolongi, the life and death of Karaiskakis, and the suppression of the 1836 uprisings in Aetolia-Acarnania.
