It used to be the street with the most expensive stores of international clothing and footwear brands, but with the financial crisis of the 2010s, few of them have remained. Today it is a diverse street and is mainly a culinary destination with an urban identity. Among the various types of shops, there are cafes and restaurants loved by both locals and tourists. All these cafes of various styles, restaurants with Greek and foreign cuisines (mainly Italian and Asian), pastry shops and small bars can be found mainly in the part of the street between Ploutarchou and Agias Sophias Streets.
During the 1960s, Proxenou Koromila Street was full of brothels and was a popular destination for sailors and the US Navy. During the 1980s, it was the heart of the city’s nightlife, with many bars, discotheques and other clubs. In the 2000s, the street changed rapidly, due to the investments of wealthy businessmen in luxury chain stores. It was a favourite destination for fashion and jewelry lovers and was nicknamed “the street of wealth”. After the economic crisis, everything changed and the street’s character is more “mixed” today. In half a century, Proxenou Koromila is the street that has changed so much, like no other, a fact that shows the movement and impact of capital in the urban space.
