What I can see
On the upper level of the underground station, we can admire inscribed marble urns with sculpted decoration (100-300 AD) and parts of a mosaic floor and wall paintings of a cemetery basilica from 450-500 AD. Moreover, a central screen displays archaeological findings from the excavations carried out during the construction of the metro. Two vertical axes of escalators in different directions lead to the central train platform, which includes security doors.
What I can't see
In the area of this station, a part of the eastern cemetery of the ancient city, which was located outside its walls, was discovered. Its development began during the Hellenistic years and its continuous use during the Roman years, made the graves very dense, which were frequently overlapped, reused or even destroyed. After 300 AD, the necropolis began to be Christianised and a cult building was constructed within the cemetery, succeeded by a three-aisled basilica (450-500 AD) and surrounded by clusters of vaulted tombs. The offerings in the graves testified to the social and economic status of the dead, as well as the multicultural character of the city over time. A four-level museum space with a total area of 6,370 square meters will soon open at the intersection of the metro lines (crossover), where some of the approximately 300,000 findings, from the excavations carried out during the construction of the metro, will be exhibited.
