This marble plaque bears the names of students of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the University of Macedonia and the International Hellenic University. They were 13 of the 57 dead in one of the worst tragedies of modern Greece, the Tempi train crash. The monument was built on the initiative and at the expense of student associations in Thessaloniki. The plaque also bears the following phrases: “The crime in Tempi will not be forgotten. On the path of struggle, life wins! We, your fellow students, will not forget you. We will become your voice!”
On February 28, 2023, a commercial train heading to Athens collided with an Athens-Thessaloniki passenger train. Dozens were injured and more than half of the dead were young people. The circumstances of the accident, the corruption, which is directly linked to its causes, as well as the subsequent government actions, were scandalous. All these, have caused social outrage, which has been systematically expressed in mass demonstrations and many people openly talk about the “Tempi crime”. It is an issue that still strongly concerns Greek society and the judicial investigation is ongoing. Monuments for the dead of Tempi are also located in the New Seafront of Thessaloniki (The Tree of Memory, The End) and in Athens.
