The Valaoritou area is the former Frankish Quarter (Frangomachalas). Thessalonians who hailed from other European countries lived here. The district largely burned down during the fire of 1917. Following the disaster, and after the creation of Tsimiski Street, during which time it became separated from the Ladadika district, several modern buildings were constructed. Only a few buildings have survived that are reminiscent of the Frankish district. During the day, there is calmness in the streets of the densely-built neighbourhood. The remaining small shops and the various kinds of graffiti and slogans on the walls draw the attention of visitors. When darkness falls, the quiet neighbourhood turns into a nightlife pole with bars and clubs, mainly playing mostly mainstream music, but also alternative music, while there are also some LGBTQ-friendly bars.
This is a traditionally productive neighbourhood with small warehouses and shops, which are passed down from generation to generation, as well as hip bars and art spaces. The special character of the Valaoritou area has changed significantly in recent years. Today, its nightlife is the dominant feature of the area, which is frequented by students.
