What I can see
The building of the Hellenic Telecommunications Organization is a very clear example of a building that combines elements of modernism and neoclassicism and is a late work of the architect Anastasios Metaxas. The building has solid facades, with pilasters that coexist with Art Deco, which is why it has been characterized as an example of “archaic modernism”. The two top floors were built later.
What I can't see
During World War II, the employees of the then Telephone Company went on the first major strike in occupied Athens, despite the threats of the occupying Prime Minister Tsolakoglou. Their demands were finally met and this gave hope to Athenians. Two years later, however, a collaborationist employee gave a list of his colleagues that were involved in the resistance against the Nazis to the enemy. The building was surrounded, almost 200 people were arrested and 15 employees were eventually executed in Kaissariani.
